Anniversary Circle Grant Update

2006. The first Anniversary Circle grants were awarded in our 2006, our 25th  Anniversary year.

The area of "Youth Philanthropy" was chosen by the members as the initial grant from the Circle Fund. In an effort to involve the youth of Centre County in developing a philanthropic mindset, students in each of the five Centre County high schools were awarded $2,000 to use as they determined for the betterment of their schools and school life.

A  non-voting faculty advisor or facilitator could help, but it was to be the students who chose, developed and implemented the project. The only other guideline was that it would hopefully have some permanence. The intent was to not restrict the students but to allow for creativity and out of-the-box ideas while they learned about wise philanthropy.

The selected projects were (click on the school for the complete proposal):

  • Bellefonte Student Council - School and morale improvements
  • Penns Valley Senior High Student Council - Transformation of Library space
  • Philipsburg-Osceola Student Council and Key Club - Spring 2007 "Make A Difference" Day
  • State College Area High School Student Selection Committee - Design and implementation of a Recycling Enhancement Program

To date we have received final reports from Penns Valley and Philipsburg-Osceola. Click here to see a shortened version of their reports.

2007. $10,000 awarded to Strawberry Fields for a new program.

At the May membership luncheon the members selected the Strawberry Fields' Fairweather Lodge project. The selection committee composed of Circle members had solicited ideas, researched and reviewed the ideas and had narrowed them down to three proposals which were presented at the luncheon for consideration.

The Fairweather Lodge Program is a relatively new residential alternative for assisting persons with mental health concerns. The program model promotes self-sufficiency through peer support, employment activity and early intervention with regard to potential crisis situations. It includes an actual working community, which not only encourages residents to gain educational training and experience in running a business, but also helps educate the community on stereotypes and stigmas associated with mental illness.
