| Bellefonte Student Council ProposalThe Bellefonte Area High School Student Council would like to thank you for your generous offer of $2,000 to be used toward school and morale improvements. We sincerely appreciate your interest in helping our students. At the meeting of the High School Student Council on Wednesday, September 27th, the following ideas for school and morale improvement were discussed. 1. Red and White Fridays -The homeroom wearing the largest percentage of red and white will receive a $1 off coupon to be used towards any school event. The purpose of this is to increase school spirit and involvement in school activities. 2. Clocks in the Hallways -The purpose of this is so students will make it to class on time. (This may be part of the renovation plan; however, if it is not, we would like to provide them for the school.) 3. Books for the Library -We would like to buy more books for the library for students to enjoy. The purpose of this is to promote reading and so that the kids have more of a variety of books to choose from. 4. Information Center - This would be a large cork board located near the office and it would have all the information that is happening for that week of school. This would include but not be limited to sporting events, fine arts events, meetings, and special announcements. 5. Computer software/television- The purpose of this would be to help students stay informed what is happening on the school campus. It would be used for the displaying of school announcements on a television in the cafeteria. Thank you for offering us $2,000 to improve our school. Your generosity will be beneficial to all Bellefonte Area High School students in the present and future. Penns Valley Senior High Student Council ProposalOur school library is one of the most underutilized resources in Penns Valley High School. As this is extremely unfortunate, the Senior High Student Council would like to take advantage of the money that is being offered by the Centre County Community Foundation and make the library an exciting aspect of the school. We believe that by transforming the library from an industrial space into a more comfortable and personalized one, students will be stimulated and inspired and more importantly will want to spend time in the library The atmosphere of the library is cold, industrial and somewhat uninviting. It has harsh lighting and uncomfortable wooden seating. Also, several of the swivel chairs at the computers are in disrepair. We wish to purchase comfortable armchairs and sofas and lamps that will be attached to tables to prevent damage to them. We would like to replace the broken swivel chairs as well. We hope to make the library comfortable and fun. In addition, we wish to personalize our library through the American Library Assoc. program. The purchase of this programs along with a color printer capable of producing a 11x17 copy and a digital camera will allow us to make individualized "READ" posters featuring the images of Penns Valley Students with their favorite books. These posters will increase the students interest in books and knowledge. They will also help to "custom fit" our library to our school and students. Our library needs to be a place where students want to be. In order to make this happen it needs to become a calm, individual space. We hope to create this kind of an atmosphere by installing new sofas, chairs, lamps and by creating posters so students. The money that is being offered to us will be used to make this transformation happen. Click here to see their final report. Philipsburg-Osceola Senior High School Student Council and Key Club ProposalStudents from the Key Club and Senior High School Student Council met and discussed what they would like to do for a community service project. Many of the students expressed their disappointment in not being able to participate in the scheduled Day of Caring with the United Way due to the lack of funds to pay for subs (substitutes) for teachers to help supervise all of the students participating. Members of the groups had heard from many of the over 150 students who had participated before and the consensus was the the groups would assist in planning the same type of day for the Philipsburg area in the Spring of 2007 with the help of funds from the Centre County Community Foundation. Students decided they would help by contacting organizations that may need help or have projects for students to do, contacting organizations that may be able to assist with supplies for projects, etc. The students and teachers have been participating in the Day of Caring since 2001-02 and many people from sites that we have helped in the past were also very disappointed that we could not participate this year. The Center County Community Foundation funds would allow this well received community service project to continue. Click here to see their final report. State College Area School District High School ProposalWe, the State College Area High School student members of the Anniversary Circle Awards Fund Selection Committee, accept and approve the proposal submitted by Students For Recycling Extension (SFRE) in regards to the use of the Youth Philanthropy grant. We recommend the proposal submitted by SFRE be awarded the full amount ($2,000) of the grant. We are all impressed with the SFRE proposal to expand the recycling efforts within the State College Area High School and also recommend that the goals of the group be considered on a larger scale for the entire district. Recycling practices as laid out in the proposal advocate implementation of an action plan for extended recycling education and expansion throughout the school buildings. This proposal will have immediate effect on the attitudes of people attending the high school and hopefully will contribute to long-term effects on their education, awareness, responsible behavior and continued good citizenship into the future. ProposalA group of students, hereafter known as the Students For Recycling Extension (SFRE), proposes to use the Youth Philanthropy grant of the Centre County Community Foundation, Inc. to design and implement a recycling enhancement program within the State College Area High School – Delta, North and South buildings. This student action group consists of State High students who care about their environment and their school. SFRE feels that recycling is a very important issue within the community, and especially within the high school buildings. The problem, however, is that while the community has a satisfactory recycling system, the high school does not. For example, while recycling bins exist in most classrooms in the school buildings, the majority of those bins are misused, and as a result, a mix of non-recyclable and recyclable refuse collects. The contents of these bins therefore cannot be recycled as is, and must by thrown away by the custodial staff who cannot sort them. Thus, more waste needs to be managed, which leads to increased costs for the school, and ultimately the acceleration of the rate at which the world consumes resources. SFRE will focus their program on:
SFRE recognizes the need to address problems within our environment, and understands that little things like raising awareness can make things happen, with a positive benefit for everyone. We would like to help our school, our environment, and our future by raising awareness and supporting positive recycling practices within the State College Area High School buildings in an effort to give back to our community.
