Youth Philanthropy Project Reports

Penns Valley High School Library Project

The Centre County Community Foundation donated $2,000 to allow the school to make the Library an exciting and personalized space. The READ program and accessories were purchased along with several chairs and ottomans. The Student Council made up the difference in the costs of these improvements.

The READ Program: Total Expenditure - $595.74

This program from the American Library Association allows for "READ" posters to be made and individualized with students' pictures. Also purchased was a digital camera and carrying case, a 1.0 G memory card, rechargeable batteries and charger, and 11x17 paper.  It wasn't necessary to purchase a printer since the Technology Lab had recently purchased one that could print the needed size. The first poster was a big success -  Principal D'Ambrosia holding Oh, the Places You'll Go by Dr. Suess.

Chairs and Ottomans: Total Expenditure - $1,802

Five chairs and three ottomans were purchased from Lush Brothers. Items are made of polyester and cotton and were Scotchguarded.

Philipsburg-Osceola "Students Make-A-Difference" Day

52 Juniors and 27 Seniors participated in the "P-O Students Make a Difference Day" on Friday, April 27, 2007.

Twelve teams of students and faculty members spent the day doing projects at: Moshannon Valley EMS, Hope Fire Company Recreation Building, Moshannon Valley YMCA, Fairview Park (Osceola Mills), Immaculate Conception Cemetery (Osceola Mills), First Presbyterian Church (Philipsburg), Philipsburg Community Action, Philipsburg Historical Foundation/Old Mud Church Cemetery; Tyrone Pike First Church of Christ and Cold Stream Recreation Area.

Student coordinators solicited proposals from the various organizations for the projects, invited students to participate, secured parental permissions, formed the teams, set up the schedules and work assignments, arranged buses to transport - all the parts involved to make it a success.

Participants were given recognition certificates and awarded 5 hours of community service.

One student wrote - ...of all the programs I have volunteered for I feel that projects such as (Day of Caring or Make-A-Difference) have the largest impact on our small community...many kids work a lot of hours during school...we don't have as much time to volunteer...By doing this during the day and having transportation available many of us are more than willing to spend the entire day cleaning...doing yard work; or any small or large task...We are giving back to a community that has raised us. Not only is it for others but also for us.

Another wrote - ...This year I had been worried that Day of Caring would not get to happen...I think it is such and important experience for students. When the site hosts show their gratitude for the work that the students do, it really makes an impact on the students. It builds a bond between the youth and the older generations of the community, which is so important for a healthy community.

One of the site hosts wrote - Never let it be said that young students can't make a difference in their communities through volunteering. I know I was proud to have them for the day and see the hard work they did and also the fund that had doing it.
