Focus Centre County

In an effort to continue leadership on issues important to Centre County and to focus future philanthropic development on a community concern, in late 2006 the foundation received a $50,000 “Leadership Challenge Award” through the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The purpose of the Leadership Challenge Award was to, “…add a new level of engagement for CCCF in its central role as the community foundation of Centre County” (Ibargüen, 2006). Through the Leadership Challenge Award, the Centre County Community Foundation sought to convene residents across Centre County to identify a singular transformational issue.

Smart Start

In 2001 the Centre County Community Foundation launched Smart Start – Centre County, an early childhood education/school readiness initiative to assure that every child in Centre County enters school ready to learn. Our partners in this effort are the Centre County United Way and the Child Development and Family Council of Centre County. CCCF provides significant funding for Smart Start through grants from our discretionary funds.

The mission of Smart Start is to build a “network of individuals, businesses and organizations that will promote the healthy growth and development of children in the County.” Smart Start revolves around four main ideas that influence early learning and school readiness: health care, affordable quality child care and education, supportive parents and families, and a community that places importance on the early learning and well-being of children.

Smart Start-Centre County has incorporated and has obtained 501(c)3 determination. Smart Start has brought together hundreds of people and dozens of organizations to work for a stronger and better start for our youngest citizens. You may contact Smart Start – Centre County for more information at 814-238-0331.
